Dr. Linda Schmidt Director

Dr. Linda Schmidt is an Assistant Professor in the Department of Mechanical Engineering.  She completed her doctorate in Mechanical Engineering at Carnegie Mellon University and developed a grammar-based, generate and optimize approach to mechanical design.  Her B.S. and M.S. degrees were granted by Iowa State University for work in Industrial Engineering with a specialization in queuing theory, the theory of waiting in lines.

Her homepage is located here and can be contacted at lschmidt@eng.umd.edu

Her research interests include computational design, design optimization, and developing formal methods for design. On the educational side of the academic world, her current interests include the development of student project team training materials to build more effective engineering student project teams.  She has thus far supervised four students to their Master of Science degrees.

Researchers

Hai Shi Graduate Researcher

Hai is a Ph.D.-seeking graduate student in Mechanical Engineering at the University of Maryland. He received his B.E. major in Mechanical Engineering and B.E. minor in Electronics and Computer Technology at Tsinghua University (China) in July 1995. He received his M.S. in Pattern Recognition and Intelligent Control at Institute of Automation, Chinese Academy of Sciences, in July 1998.

His homepage is located here and can be contacted at haishi@glue.umd.edu

He is researching grammar-based function-to-form technology in developing generative designer assistance tools.
